Auto Square-Off by Broker — How to Avoid It

The Broker's Auto Square-Off Is Not a Risk Management Tool. It Is a Last Resort That Executes at Market Prices at the Worst Possible Time. Avoiding It Is Always Better Than Experiencing It.

Introductory Context

"Prevention is categorically better than experiencing auto square-off. The conditions that trigger it -- insufficient margin, wrong product type, expiry management failure -- are all entirely within the trader's control when the correct operational practices are maintained. This topic covers all three auto square-off conditions and the specific practices that prevent each. "

Cause 1 - Margin Shortfall and the Margin Call Process

The most common cause of unexpected auto square-off for multi-position options traders is a margin shortfall -- available margin falls below the minimum required by the SEBI Peak Margin Rules (Topic 8.13). When the shortfall occurs: the broker first sends a margin call (email, SMS, push notification) requesting the trader to either add funds or reduce positions. If the trader does not respond within the specified timeframe, the broker's system auto squares off positions to reduce margin requirements to within the available balance.

The auto square-off from margin shortfall targets: (1) Positions with the highest margin utilisation (typically short options or futures positions), starting with the position that contributes most to the margin shortfall. (2) The broker's system does not evaluate which position is most analytically sound to maintain -- it prioritises reducing margin utilisation as quickly as possible. The result: the positions the trader would most want to keep may be the ones the auto square-off closes first.

The 30 Percent Margin Buffer Rule Prevents Margin-Triggered Auto Square-Off

The 30 percent free margin buffer rule from Topic 8.12 is specifically designed to prevent margin-triggered auto square-off. If Available Margin is always at least 30 percent above the total SPAN + Exposure Margin requirement, a 30 percent VIX spike (which might increase SPAN requirements by 25 to 30 percent for short options positions) still leaves the account above the minimum required margin. Monitor the margin buffer at the three daily checkpoints (9:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM) to ensure the buffer is maintained throughout the session.

Cause 2 - MIS Product Type for Overnight-Intended Positions

The second most common auto square-off cause: entering an overnight position with the MIS (Margin Intraday Square-off) product type instead of NRML. MIS positions are automatically squared off by the broker at their specified intraday cutoff time (approximately 3:15 to 3:25 PM depending on the broker) regardless of current P&L. A call position entered at 10:00 AM with MIS product type, showing a Rs 8,000 profit by 2:45 PM, will be forcibly closed at approximately 3:20 PM whether the profit-target has been reached or not.

Prevention is a single field verification: check the Product field in every order form before submission. NRML for overnight positions. MIS only for positions explicitly intended to be closed within the current session. The one-second verification of this field before clicking Buy eliminates an error that can close a profitable multi-day position on the same day it was entered.

Broker Auto Square-Off Cutoff Times

Zerodha Kite MIS: approximately 3:20 PM (may vary). Upstox MIS: approximately 3:15 PM. Angel One Intraday: approximately 3:20 PM. NSE Expiry: 3:30 PM (all unexercised OTM options expire worthless; ITM options are auto-settled at intrinsic value by NSCCL). These times are approximate and subject to change -- verify current cutoff times in each broker's risk management policy documentation. For NRML (overnight) positions, there is no intraday auto square-off -- positions can be held until explicitly closed or until expiry.

Cause 3 - Expiry Day Position Management Failure

On expiry day (Tuesday for Nifty weekly, last Tuesday of the month for Bank Nifty, FinNifty, stocks), positions in expiring contracts must be managed before 3:30 PM. ITM (In-the-Money) options are automatically exercised and cash-settled at the intrinsic value (the difference between the settlement price and the strike price) -- this is automatic and beneficial for long ITM option holders. OTM (Out-of-the-Money) options expire worthless at 3:30 PM -- the full premium paid is lost if not exited before expiry.

The risk of expiry-day inaction: a call option that was ATM or slightly OTM in the morning may be deep OTM by 3:00 PM if the underlying has moved against the position. Rather than expiring worthless, exiting the option with any remaining time value before 3:30 PM recovers the residual premium. Even an OTM option with Rs 5 per unit remaining time value (Rs 375 for one Nifty lot) is worth recovering rather than allowing to expire at zero. The theta stop protocol from Topic 8.9 addresses this -- positions with insufficient remaining value should be exited well before expiry rather than left to expire.

Nifty Expiry Day (Tuesday) Requires Active Monitoring

On Nifty Tuesday expiry, positions in the expiring Tuesday series must be managed by 3:30 PM. Positions that are: deeply ITM -- allow NSCCL auto-settlement at intrinsic value (no action required, the settlement is favourable). Slightly ITM or ATM -- consider manual exit in the afternoon session when the premium still retains some time value; the settlement price may differ slightly from the expected intrinsic value. OTM -- exit any position with remaining time value before 3:30 PM; do not allow them to expire worthless if any premium remains. The Tuesday expiry requires a specific monitoring session between 2:00 PM and 3:15 PM for any positions in the expiring series.

Emergency Response to a Margin Call

If a margin call is received during market hours: immediately assess the situation in the Funds tab. Identify the specific shortfall amount. The two options are: (1) Add funds to the account through the bank transfer or UPI payment link in the Funds tab (most brokers provide instant fund addition during market hours through the platform). (2) Reduce position size by exiting one or more positions. Calculate which position reduction would bring the margin requirement below the available balance with the 30 percent buffer reinstated.

If adding funds: the amount to add should bring the available balance to at least 130 percent of the total margin requirement (the 30 percent buffer restored). If reducing positions: exit the position with the highest margin utilisation first (typically the short leg of a spread or the naked options position if any). Verify the margin status in the Funds tab after the exit to confirm the shortfall is resolved. Then identify what caused the margin breach (typically a VIX spike or adverse price move) and assess whether the 30 percent buffer rule needs to be recalibrated for the current market conditions.

Auto square-off at market prices during a stress event is the worst possible exit scenario -- it combines the wrong timing, the wrong price, and the wrong quantity selection into a single transaction that compounds the financial damage. The practices that prevent it require thirty seconds of daily attention: verify the margin buffer, verify the product type, and monitor the expiry calendar.

Add Auto Square-Off Prevention to the Daily Pre-Market Checklist

Add three specific checks to the daily pre-market routine from Topic 9.12: (1) Margin status: open the Funds tab and verify Available Margin is at least 130 percent of total SPAN + Exposure requirement (30 percent buffer maintained). (2) Product type review: for each open position in the Positions tab, verify the product type shows NRML (not MIS) for any position intended to be held overnight. (3) Expiry calendar: check whether today is any instrument's expiry day and whether any open positions are in expiring contracts that require management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quiz

A trader's account shows: SPAN Margin required Rs 65,000. Exposure Margin Rs 12,000. Total margin required Rs 77,000. Available balance Rs 85,000. India VIX spikes from 14 to 18 during the session, increasing the SPAN requirement by 28 percent to Rs 83,200. What is the new total margin required, is there a shortfall, and what should the trader do immediately?
