Strategy 1 - The Morning Gap Fade
Entry condition: Nifty gaps significantly at Tuesday open (more than 1 percent above or below the prior Friday's close) due to overnight global news (US market close, Asian market open, macro data release). The gap fade strategy: if Nifty opens more than 1 percent above Friday's close, buy ATM puts (expecting the gap to be partially closed intraday -- the morning gap often fades 30 to 50 percent by lunchtime). If opens more than 1 percent below, buy ATM calls for the same reason. Position size: Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 premium total (small, defined risk). Entry: first 15 to 30 minutes of Tuesday open (9:15 to 9:45 AM). Exit: close by 12:00 PM regardless. Stop: if option loses 50 percent of premium by 11:00 AM, close. Logic: large overnight gaps in Indian markets frequently see partial intraday reversal as domestic participants respond, creating a fade opportunity that resolves within the morning session.
Strategy 2 - The Max Pain Gravitational Play
Entry condition: by Tuesday 11:00 AM, the underlying is 150 to 300 points away from the weekly Max Pain level with 4.5 hours to expiry. The Max Pain gravity strategy: if the underlying is above Max Pain, buy ATM puts (expecting the gravitational pull toward Max Pain to bring Nifty lower). If below Max Pain, buy ATM calls (expecting a bounce toward Max Pain). Position size: Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 premium. Entry: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Exit: when Nifty reaches Max Pain level OR by 2:00 PM (whichever first). Stop: if option loses 50 percent of premium by 1:00 PM. Logic: institutional put/call writers managing their expiry-day positions apply gravitational pressure on the underlying toward Max Pain -- creating a statistically observable tendency for the underlying to migrate toward the highest OI strike by expiry (Topic 20.7 covers the Max Pain mechanism in full detail).
Strategy 3 - The 0DTE Iron Condor
Entry condition: Nifty is at the weekly Max Pain level (or within 50 points) at 9:30 to 10:00 AM on Tuesday. The underlying is expected to stay near this level through expiry. Strategy: sell an OTM call 150 to 200 points above current level, buy a call 100 points further OTM (bear call spread). Simultaneously sell an OTM put 150 to 200 points below, buy a put 100 points further OTM (bull put spread). Net credit: approximately Rs 10 to Rs 18 per unit for a 100-point-wing Tuesday iron condor. Maximum loss: (100 - credit) x 75 per lot. Exit: close at 80% credit collected OR by 2:00 PM. Logic: the Max Pain gravity reduces the probability of a large intraday move on expiry day when the underlying is near Max Pain at the open. The short-duration, small-wing condor captures the maximum intraday gravity.
Strategy 4 - The Afternoon Sell
Entry condition: by Tuesday 2:00 PM, the underlying is within 50 points of the week's dominant OI strike (either highest call OI or highest put OI), and it has been in this range for more than 60 minutes. Strategy: sell a very narrow iron condor (50-point wings on each side, current level at the centre). Net credit: Rs 5 to Rs 10 per unit. Maximum loss: (50 - credit) x 75. Exit: close at 3:15 PM (15 minutes before settlement) OR when the spread reaches 90 percent of maximum credit. Logic: in the final 90 minutes of expiry day, when the underlying is pinned near a high-OI strike, the remaining time value decays rapidly toward zero and the gamma is so extreme that the short strikes remain unbreached as long as the underlying stays in the 50-point range. Very high win rate (approximately 70 to 80 percent when the conditions are precisely met) but very small income per trade.
Strategy 5 - The Expiry Straddle Sell (Advanced, High Risk)
This strategy is included for completeness but explicitly requires significant 0DTE experience before attempting. Entry condition: by 2:30 PM on Tuesday, the underlying is within 20 points of the ATM strike. Strategy: sell 1 lot of an ATM straddle (both the ATM call and ATM put). The straddle credit: Rs 10 to Rs 20 per unit (the final residual time value). Exit: by 3:15 PM or when either option reaches 2x the credit collected. Logic: in the final hour with the underlying near the strike, the straddle's combined time value often decays rapidly to near zero if the underlying stays within 15 to 20 points. Risk: any move beyond 20 points from the strike in the final hour instantly destroys the short straddle through intrinsic value. This strategy has an extremely narrow profit zone and should only be attempted with 0.25 percent of account or less per trade.
0DTE Strategy Risk Parameters
Strategy 1 (Gap Fade): Max loss Rs 5-10K. Stop 50% of premium. Exit by 12 PM. Strategy 2 (Max Pain): Max loss Rs 5-10K. Stop 50%. Exit 2 PM. Strategy 3 (0DTE Condor): Max loss (100-credit) x 75. Exit 80% credit or 2 PM. Strategy 4 (Afternoon Sell): Max loss (50-credit) x 75. Exit 3:15 PM or 90% credit. Strategy 5 (Expiry Straddle Sell): Max loss 2x credit. Exit 3:15 PM. NEVER exceed 0.5% of account in any single 0DTE trade.
0DTE risk management is not a set of rules applied to a strategy -- it is the strategy itself. Every 0DTE position must be defined at entry: the maximum loss, the stop trigger, the exit time, and the profit target. Without these four pre-defined parameters, entering a 0DTE position is pure speculation. With them, the 0DTE position is a structured high-leverage trade with a specific expected value that can be tracked across many entries to evaluate the approach's statistical validity.
0DTE Win Rate Alone Is Meaningless Without Loss Size Data
Novice 0DTE traders often cite high win rates: 'I win 80% of my 0DTE trades.' But win rate without the corresponding loss data is meaningless. If the 80% winning trades each earn Rs 1,500 per lot and the 20% losing trades each lose Rs 12,000 per lot: expected value = (0.80 x Rs 1,500) - (0.20 x Rs 12,000) = Rs 1,200 - Rs 2,400 = -Rs 1,200 per trade. Negative expected value despite 80% win rate. Always track both win rate AND average win and loss amounts. The expected value calculation is the only honest assessment of 0DTE strategy performance.
