Introductory Context
"Quantitative classic floor-trader pivot point strategy for intraday Indian derivative markets. Featuring frozen geometric support, resistance, and strict gap handling."
Floor-Trader Pivot Points: The Classic Geometry of Intraday Price Action
Originally developed by pit traders on Chicago commodity exchanges and widely adopted by institutional day traders across Dalal Street, Floor-Trader Pivot Points establish a set of predetermined, frozen intraday reference levels derived directly from the preceding trading session's High, Low, and Close.
The central pivot (C) represents yesterday's consensus equilibrium price. Resistance (R) and Support (S) are derived via symmetrical geometric reflection. Because these levels are calculated overnight and remain 100% stationary throughout the active trading day, they provide clear, objective, and latency-free path boundaries for intraday momentum breakouts and mean-reversion trades on Nifty and Bank Nifty futures.
• The Frozen Level Identities
Calculated strictly after the prior session close from official prices P_H, P_L, P_C:
Pivot (C) = (P_H + P_L + P_C) / 3
Resistance (R) = 2C - P_L
Support (S) = 2C - P_H
Intraday Path Execution Rules
Throughout the Indian trading day (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST), orders are executed according to strict path progression rules:
When price crosses above the central pivot (Price > C), enter Long. When price reaches or exceeds resistance (Price ≥ R), immediately Exit Long and flatten position to lock in intraday target gains.
When price crosses below the central pivot (Price < C), enter Short. When price reaches or breaks support (Price ≤ S), immediately Cover Short and flatten position.
Gap Handling & Strict Freeze Constraints
To prevent look-ahead bias and erroneous backtest fills, quantitative systems must enforce two non-negotiable rules:
- Zero Intraday Updating: The levels C, R, S must remain 100% frozen from the previous day's official close. Rebuilding pivot points dynamically using today's forming highs or lows is a severe implementation error.
- Gap-Through Policy: If the market gaps open above Resistance (Open > R) or below Support (Open < S), the path rule from C is invalidated. The system remains Flat until price re-enters the valid range between S and R.
- Mandatory EOD Square-Off: All intraday positions are closed by 3:15 PM IST to eliminate overnight gap risk and avoid broker auto-square-off penalty charges.
Failure Mode on Trend Days: Capped Upside
On powerful unidirectional trend days (e.g. Union Budget announcements or RBI policy rate surprises), price will slice straight through Resistance R and continue surging higher for hundreds of points. The classic pivot system will exit at R, leaving the majority of the massive intraday trend on the table.
