Introductory Context
"Systematic tactical asset allocation rotating between liquid NSE equity, banking, IT, commodity (Gold/Silver), and Liquid BeES based on multi-period momentum."
Systematic Asset Allocation via Liquid Indian ETFs
In Indian financial markets, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have expanded beyond broad-market indices into liquid, specialized vehicles tracking key economic sectors, factor indices, precious metals, and cash equivalents. The ETF Alpha Momentum Rotation Strategy systematically rotates capital into the top-performing asset classes and sectors while maintaining an active risk-off cash filter.
By trading liquid ETFs on the National Stock Exchange (such as Nifty 50 BeES, Junior BeES, Bank BeES, IT BeES, Auto BeES, Pharma BeES, Gold BeES, Silver BeES, and Liquid BeES), institutional and retail quant portfolios capture macro trends with zero single-stock idiosyncratic risk, low expense ratios (< 0.20%), and zero lock-in periods.
• The ETF Alpha Rotation Rule in One Sentence
Rank the universe of liquid NSE ETFs monthly using a composite score of 3-month and 6-month momentum; allocate 50% weight each to the top 2 ranked ETFs provided they trade above their 200-day Simple Moving Average (200-SMA); otherwise, park capital safely in Liquid BeES.
Mathematical Formulation: Composite Momentum & Trend Filter
For each eligible ETF i in the universe, calculate the composite momentum score at the end of each calendar month:
Where Returni, 3M = [Price(t) - Price(t - 63)] / Price(t - 63) and Returni, 6M = [Price(t) - Price(t - 126)] / Price(t - 126).
Apply the Regime Safety Gate (Trend Filter):
- Portfolio Construction: Select the top 2 ranked ETFs with Gate = 1. Allocate 50% capital to each.
- Defensive Cash Allocation: If only 1 ETF satisfies the 200-SMA gate, allocate 50% to that ETF and 50% to Liquid BeES (Overnight Repo / TREPS yield ~6.65% p.a.). If neither satisfies the gate (e.g. deep bear market), allocate 100% to Liquid BeES.
- Turnover & Execution Buffer: An ETF must beat an existing held ETF by at least 1.5% in composite score to trigger a rebalance, preventing unnecessary churn and STT costs.
