Core Purpose
To answer: 'Can one chart show trend, momentum, support–resistance, and balance — instantly?'
What is it?
Most indicators answer one question. Ichimoku answers four.
It shows Trend direction, Trend strength, Dynamic S/R, and Momentum alignment all at a glance.
The name literally means "One-look equilibrium chart".
If you need many indicators to confirm Ichimoku, you are using it incorrectly.
Expanded Definition
Deeper Explanation
Markets constantly search for equilibrium.
Balanced: Consolidates.
Imbalance: Trends.
Ichimoku is built around balance vs imbalance measured through time.
Every component asks: "Is the market balanced — or biased?"
Market Psychology
It reflects collective agreement over time.
Short-term (Tenkan)
Medium-term (Kijun)
Long-term (Cloud)
When all align, trends persist. When they diverge, markets struggle. It visually displays this alignment without interpretation.
How it is Constructed
Five Components:
1. Tenkan-sen (Conversion Line): (9-period High + Low)/2. Short-term balance.
2. Kijun-sen (Base Line): (26-period High + Low)/2. Medium-term balance (The Anchor).
3. Senkou Span A (Leading Span A): (Tenkan + Kijun)/2, shifted 26 periods ahead.
4. Senkou Span B (Leading Span B): (52-period High + Low)/2, shifted 26 periods ahead.
5. Chikou Span (Lagging Span): Current Close shifted 26 periods back.
Conceptual View
It uses Mid-prices ((H+L)/2), not closes (except for Chikou).
This emphasizes the *center* of the range (equilibrium) rather than the emotional close.
The Cloud (Kumo) is formed by the area between Span A and Span B, projected into the future.
How to Read & Interpret
Direction
Price Relationship
Value Zones
Cloud Thickness:
Thick Cloud: Strong structure/support. Hard to break.
Thin Cloud: Weak structure. Easy to break.
Directional Context
The Signals:
TK Cross: Tenkan crossing Kijun (like a MACD cross but using equilibrium lines).
Kumo Breakout: Price piercing the cloud.
Chikou Confirmation: Lagging span clear of price (Momentum confirmed).
Settings & Configuration
Default Settings
9, 26, 52, 26
Based on traditional Japanese trading weeks (6 days/week originally). Even with 5-day weeks, the rhythm remains robust.
Popular Settings by Timeframe
Intraday Trading
- Standard (9, 26, 52)
Swing Trading
- Standard or Doubled (18, 52, 104) for crypto/volatile assets
Long-term
Changing values blindly often destroys the system's harmony.
Sensitivity vs Reliability
Asset-Class Wise Adjustment Logic
Stocks
Standard settings work well.
Indices
Excellent for defining major trend regimes.
Forex
The original home of Ichimoku (JPY pairs especially).
Crypto
Doubling settings (20, 60, 120, 30) is popular to account for 24/7 markets, but standard still works.
Professional Tweaks
Professionals use it to: - Define market regime (Is it trending or ranging?) - Filter trades (Only long if Price > Cloud) - Manage trends (Trailing stop usage on Kijun-sen) - Answer: "Is the market balanced, biased, or broken?"
When NOT to Change
Structure matters. stick to the ratios (approx 1:3:6).
Common Mistakes
Treating it like a simple crossover system
Ignoring the Cloud thickness
Using it on very low timeframes (Noise)
Mixing it randomly with other indicators (Clutter)
Practical Example
Price rallies. Tenkan crosses Kijun. Bullish? Check the Cloud. Price is below a thick Red Cloud. The professional waits. The rally hits the bottom of the Cloud and fails. The "Kumo Twist" (future cloud color flip) didn't happen. No trade. Saved from a trap.
Limitations
- Visual clutter for beginners
- Less effective in low liquidity
- Lags sudden events
- Not for scalping

Educator's Note
It does not chase price. It respects structure. Most indicators tell you what happened. Ichimoku tells you where balance exists.
