The Delta Rebalancing Protocol 

Professional delta rebalancing protocol for a large options book: (1) Continuous monitoring: the real-time risk system recalculates portfolio delta every 5-15 minutes throughout the trading session. (2) Rebalancing trigger: when portfolio delta exceeds ±X Nifty units from the target (typically ±20-30 units), a rebalancing order is generated. (3) Hedge execution: buy or sell sufficient Nifty futures lots to bring the portfolio delta within the target range. (4) Hedge sizing: number of futures lots to trade = (current delta - target delta) / 75. If portfolio delta is +45 units and target is 0: sell (45/75) = 0.6 lots -- round to 1 lot. Average daily portfolio delta drift from market movements: approximately 15-25 units per 100-point Nifty move. Expected rebalancing frequency: 2-4 times per week in normal markets. Cost per rebalancing: 1-2 lots Nifty futures × Rs 30 brokerage + impact = Rs 50-100 per lot. Weekly hedging cost: Rs 100-400 per week = Rs 5,000-20,000 per year. Delta drift P&L if unhedged (±40 units × 100-point daily range): ±Rs 4,000 per day. Annual benefit of delta hedging: eliminate Rs 4,000/day drift × 250 trading days = Rs 10,00,000 annual volatility reduction. Cost (Rs 20,000 per year) << Benefit (Rs 10,00,000 directional risk reduction).

Gamma Management in Delta-Neutral Books 

A perfectly delta-neutral book is not risk-free: it has gamma. Positive gamma means the book gains from large moves in either direction (the portfolio's delta becomes more positive as the underlying rises and more negative as it falls -- the delta drift is favourable). Negative gamma means the book loses from large moves -- the portfolio's delta moves against the existing hedge as the underlying moves, creating a growing directional loss that requires increasingly expensive rebalancing to contain. For a large options income book (iron condors, credit spreads): the net gamma is negative. This negative gamma creates a specific risk: in a large-move day (a 2-3% Nifty move), the portfolio's delta drifts significantly against the hedge, and the cost of rebalancing back to delta-neutral constitutes a 'gamma loss' -- the empirical price paid for the income strategies' positive theta. Managing this gamma loss is the core discipline of delta-neutral portfolio management. 

Delta-neutral portfolio management at scale is options trading's version of the financial engineering behind every complex instrument: the deliberate construction and maintenance of specific exposures (positive theta, negative vega) while continuously neutralising the unwanted exposure (directional delta).
