MCX Gold Options — Contract Specs and Trading

Gold Is India's Second Most-Watched Financial Instrument After Nifty. MCX Gold Options Turn India's Cultural and Investment Relationship With Gold Into a Sophisticated Risk Management and Trading Tool.
DIFFICULTY LEVELAdvanced|TIME TO COMPLETE5-10 Minutes

Introductory Context

"MCX Gold options are the most liquid commodity options in India and, by some measures, among the most liquid gold derivatives markets in Asia. This liquidity -- the result of India's large domestic gold demand and the participation of jewellers, refiners, importers, and financial investors -- creates relatively tight bid-ask spreads and deep open interest at multiple strikes, making MCX Gold options more tradeable for retail participants than many other commodity options markets globally. "

MCX Gold Options - Complete Contract Specification

Underlying: MCX Gold futures (1 kilogram, 999 purity). Note: a 'mini' contract exists (100 grams) with different lot sizes -- the main gold options contract is based on the 1 kg futures. Option lot size: 100 grams (1/10th of the futures contract). Premium quotation: in rupees per 10 grams (the conventional gold pricing unit in India). Strike prices: at Rs 100 per 10 grams increments near the current price, widening to Rs 250 increments further OTM. Expiry: the last day (as specified by MCX) of each contract month. MCX Gold typically provides the current month, next month, and 2 subsequent months as available series. Settlement: cash settled against the MCX Gold futures closing price on expiry day. Physical delivery: MCX provides a separate physical delivery mechanism, but retail option holders rarely exercise physical delivery -- positions are closed before the delivery notice period.

Current gold price reference (verify from MCX real-time quotes): MCX Gold has traded in the range of approximately Rs 58,000 to Rs 73,000 per 10 grams over 2023-2024, reflecting both global gold price movements (in USD per troy ounce) and the USD/INR exchange rate. An MCX Gold call with strike Rs 68,000 per 10 grams and the current price at Rs 70,000: the call is Rs 2,000 ITM. At Rs 100 per 10 grams increments, the 68,000 CE would have intrinsic value Rs 2,000 per 10 grams and some time value. Per lot (100 grams = 10 units of 10 grams): intrinsic value per lot = Rs 2,000 x 10 = Rs 20,000.

Gold Price Drivers - What Moves MCX Gold

MCX Gold prices are determined by the interaction of three factors: (1) Global gold price in USD per troy ounce (from COMEX). MCX gold prices move in near-lockstep with COMEX gold movements during MCX's overlapping trading hours (COMEX trades from approximately 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM IST Monday-Friday, with extended hours). When COMEX gold rises $20 per troy ounce, MCX gold rises approximately Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 per 10 grams (depending on the current USD/INR rate). (2) USD/INR exchange rate. Since gold is globally priced in USD, a weaker rupee makes gold more expensive in rupees -- even if the COMEX dollar price is unchanged. A 1-rupee weakening of the rupee (USD/INR rising from 83 to 84) increases MCX gold prices by approximately Rs 475-530 per 10 grams at typical gold price levels. (3) Import duty changes. India charges significant customs duty on gold imports. Changes to this duty by the Finance Ministry (typically in the Union Budget) directly affect MCX gold prices independent of COMEX movements.

Trading Strategies for MCX Gold Options

Strategy 1 -- Long call for portfolio gold allocation. Instead of buying physical gold or gold ETFs, a call option provides leveraged gold price exposure for a defined premium cost. For an investor wanting to allocate Rs 50,000 to gold: buying 2-3 lots of MCX Gold ATM calls at approximately Rs 600-800 per 10 grams (Rs 6,000-8,000 per lot) provides gold price exposure for a fraction of the physical gold purchase cost. The risk: the premium expires worthless if gold prices fall or stay flat through the option's life. The advantage: defined maximum loss (the premium) vs unlimited downside of physical gold ownership.

Strategy 2 -- Long put for jewellery importer hedge. A jewellery manufacturer who buys gold in the market and converts it to jewellery for future sale faces the risk that gold prices fall between the time of purchase and the time of jewellery sale. A long MCX Gold put at the purchase price locks in the floor price -- if gold falls, the put gain partially offsets the reduction in the jewellery's gold value. Strategy 3 -- Short straddle during gold's ranging periods. MCX gold has historical periods of tight range consolidation (particularly after major event-driven moves) where implied volatility is elevated relative to the subsequent realised volatility. Short straddles during these consolidation periods collect the elevated IV premium as income.

MCX Gold Options -- Key Trade Parameters

Contract month ATM option: approximately Rs 500-1,200 per 10 grams premium (varies with VIX equivalent). Per lot (100 grams = 10 units of 10 grams): Rs 5,000-12,000 premium. SPAN margin for short ATM gold option: approximately Rs 15,000-25,000 per lot. Break-even for long ATM call: current gold price + premium. Break-even for long ATM put: current gold price - premium. Stop-loss for short gold option: double-premium (2x original premium). Gold implied volatility (annualised): typically 12-18% in normal markets, spiking to 25-35% during crises.

MCX Gold and the Union Budget

The Union Budget presented annually on February 1 contains the critical gold import duty rate that directly affects MCX gold prices. When the import duty is raised (which has happened multiple times in the 2013-2024 period): MCX gold prices spike immediately above the international dollar price by the incremental duty amount. When the duty is cut: MCX gold prices fall below the international parity level as the duty reduction flows through. For option traders ahead of the Budget: MCX Gold options become a specific event-driven vehicle. An ATM gold straddle bought 5-7 sessions before the Budget captures any Budget-day gold price move (both the COMEX direction AND the duty change direction). The straddle is most valuable when both the global gold direction AND the duty change are uncertain -- which is the typical pre-Budget condition.

MCX Gold is India's financial mirror of the world's oldest store of value. Every geopolitical crisis, every currency debasement episode, every inflation spike that lifts global gold prices is immediately reflected in the MCX price that Indian investors, jewellers, and savers watch daily. The gold options market provides the precision tools for engaging with this most emotionally and culturally resonant of financial assets in a structured, analytically grounded way -- converting India's centuries-old relationship with gold into modern derivatives-based risk management.

Track the Gold-USD/INR Matrix for MCX Gold Opportunities

Maintain a simple matrix that tracks two variables daily: (1) COMEX gold price change in USD per troy ounce, and (2) USD/INR rate change. The MCX gold price change in rupees = COMEX change (converted to Rs/10g) + INR change effect (approximately Rs 475-530 per Rs 1 of USD/INR change). When both variables are moving in the same direction (COMEX rising AND rupee weakening): MCX gold has a doubly-supported bullish bias -- strong case for long calls. When COMEX rises but rupee strengthens: the two effects partially cancel. When COMEX falls but rupee weakens significantly: the rupee effect may support MCX gold above the level the COMEX direction alone would suggest. This matrix identifies the most analytically clear gold option entry opportunities.
