When VIX is high and declines after entry, both the short call and short put premiums compress -- the short straddle benefits from this IV crush.
The IV Crush Problem - The Core Challenge of Long Volatility
The most important concept in long volatility strategy management is IV crush -- the sharp decline in implied volatility that occurs immediately after a major market event resolves. Before the Budget or RBI announcement, VIX rises as the market prices in the event's binary uncertainty. The premium of ATM options expands significantly. The moment the announcement is made, the uncertainty resolves and VIX collapses -- often by 20 to 40 percent in a single session. This VIX collapse compresses option premiums on both the call and put side, regardless of the underlying's directional move.
The IV crush creates a paradox for long straddle buyers: even if the underlying moves significantly in one direction after the event, the collapsing VIX on the other side may partially or fully offset the directional gain. A Nifty straddle bought just before the Budget at peak pre-Budget VIX, with the underlying subsequently moving 300 points in one direction, may show only a small net gain -- because the collapsing VIX has reduced the value of the winning leg's time value AND has made the losing leg worth almost nothing (where it once had significant time value). When Volatility Strategies Are Appropriate

Volatility Strategies Are Not Direction-Neutral in Practice
Long straddles and strangles are theoretically direction-neutral -- they profit from moves in either direction. In practice, large moves in one direction produce a position that is no longer symmetric: the winning leg is deeply ITM (high delta, large gain) while the losing leg is far OTM (near zero). At this point, the long straddle behaves like a directional position in the winning direction.
